Hot stone massage

Hot stone massage (sometimes called geothermal therapy) has its origins in ancient Eastern healing techniques. The therapy originated in the Ayurvedic system of medicine (India) about 5000 years ago, where hot stones were used to relax muscles and relieve pain. Later, the same method was employed in ancient China approximately 2000 years ago to enhance the function of the internal organs in the chest. Historically, it was also used by the Aboriginal people of Australia and the Native Americans of America. Today, it is known as a popular therapy for reducing stress and relieving muscle tension.

What is a hot stone massage?

Hot stone massage, sometimes called stone therapy or geothermal therapy, is a type of therapeutic massage in which specially heated stones are used on specific areas of the body.

This method is related to the body’s chakras or energy points. It is believed that when the flow of energy in the body is disrupted or a chakra is blocked, physical and mental discomfort occur. Hot stone massage helps to balance that energy flow.

This therapy typically uses basalt stones, which are volcanic stones with a high heat retention capacity. As a result, it spreads warmth deep into the body, relaxes muscles, and helps restore body-mind balance.

The therapist heats the stones to the right temperature before starting your massage. Sometimes essential oils or natural scrubs are used to soften and refresh the skin. This smoothes your skin and prepares your body to absorb the warmth of the stones fully.

The hot stones are then placed on specific energy centres or areas of the body that require treatment. They are usually placed on the back, but can also be used on the hands and feet.

The therapist then uses hot oil and stones to apply techniques such as gentle pressure, gliding, and kneading. This relaxes the muscles, increases blood circulation, and leaves the body feeling deeply relaxed.

Once the massage is over, the stones are carefully removed, and you are covered with a soft towel or sheet to help your body retain the warmth for a while. This time is for your deep relaxation.

Why You Need a Hot Stone Massage

Why You Need a Hot Stone Massage

Hot stone massage is not just a relaxing experience; it is a complete therapy for your body and mind. It has some special benefits that can refresh your body from the inside. Let’s find out why this message can be beneficial for you:

Deep mental and physical relaxation

As the warmth of the stones reaches deep into your body, accumulated fatigue and stress begin to melt away. It gives you a deep relaxation that is difficult to find in a regular massage.

Relief from accumulated pain

If you have chronic pain in your back, shoulders, or anywhere else in your body, this massage works wonders. The heat from the stones works directly at the source of the pain and loosens up tight muscles, giving you relief.

Increased blood circulation in the body

The warmth of your touch increases blood flow in your body, which allows more oxygen to reach every cell in your body, making you feel refreshed and energised from within.

Helps detox the body

This massage helps your lymphatic system work better, so your body can naturally clear out waste and toxins. As a result, you feel lighter and stronger.

Deep and peaceful sleep

Who doesn’t need a good night’s sleep at the end of the day? The body is so relaxed after this massage that it helps improve the quality of your sleep. Many people experience deep and uninterrupted sleep at night after a massage.

What stones are used for massage

What stones are used for massage?

The massage stones used in geothermal therapy are usually of volcanic origin, which provides our bodies with energy from the earth. Some of the stones used are basalt and obsidian. Both are black in colour and are popular for their ability to retain heat for a long time.

Basalt stone:

They are an igneous stone that is rich in iron and magnesium. Due to its high density and smooth texture, basalt stones can retain heat and are most commonly used in hot stone massages.

Obsidian stone:

It is actually natural volcanic glass, which is formed when molten lava cools rapidly. Some therapists believe that obsidian stones not only retain heat but also help remove negative energy from the body.

Typically, 20-30 stones are used for a massage. Some practitioners use 45-60 stones to provide greater effectiveness on different parts of the body. This should include at least two large stones (15× 20cm) and eight smaller stones, which are about the size of a ping-pong ball.

Hot stone massage method

It is important to create the right atmosphere before beginning a hot stone massage. Cover the massage table with a clean towel or sheet. If desired, you can light soft scented candles and play soothing music to help the client feel more relaxed.

Heating the stone

    • Heat water to about 50°C (122°F) in a thick or deep pot.
    • Leave the stones in that water for at least half an hour and check the temperature regularly with a thermometer.
    • Once the stone is hot, dry it and apply a light coat of oil.

Massage steps

    1. Have the client lie on the table and place large stones along the spine.
    2. Gently place the three stones on your forehead, chin, and cheeks (do not use essential oils here, so as not to clog pores).
    3. Place the medium stone on either side of the collarbone, on the sternum, and in the palm.
    4. Gently massage the rest of the body using a hand-sized stone.
    5. Then turn the client over. Place the stones on the shoulder blades, above the knees, and between the toes.
    6. Massage again slowly and replace the cooled stones in time.

Precautions to take before getting a hot stone massage

While hot stone massage offers numerous benefits, it may not be suitable for everyone. It is best to avoid this therapy if you have the following health conditions:

  • Serious circulatory problems
  • Body injuries, wounds, open sores, or severe inflammation
  • During a fever, it can spread infection and cause problems regulating body temperature
  • People with heart disease, who may experience increased swelling or cardiac problems
  • Uncontrolled diabetes patients
  • Pregnant women
  • Those under the influence of drugs or alcohol

Always check with a qualified healthcare professional before starting this therapy, especially if you already have any medical conditions.

The steady heat of the stones relaxes tight muscles, improves blood circulation, and helps lower stress while supporting overall body and mind health. Recent studies have also shown that hot stone therapy can help ease stress, promote restful sleep, and manage pain.

If you’re looking for a natural way to relieve daily fatigue, improve sleep, or reduce muscle tension, a hot stone massage may be a safe and effective option for you. However, it’s wise to consult a professional based on your health condition before undergoing any therapy.
